My Fake Rake by Eva Leigh My rating: 3 of 5 stars This book was a fun way to while away a few hours. I love Regency romances, and this one had a recommendation on the cover from Tessa Dare, so it seemed ideal. The plot is a fun one, though similar have been written before. Girl uses male friend to show male she’s interested in that she’s a good catch. I liked the fact that the man she was initially interested in didn’t turn out to be horrible, as is usually the case. The book has lots of humour, and a sympathetic portrayal of social anxiety. However, it was let down by some anachronistic use of language (it seemed so to me anyway, but I’m far from an expert) - for example bastard to mean a nasty person rather than someone whose parents were unmarried. There are also a number of Americanisms - though again, I’m no expert on the Regency Era, so they may have been in common usage, they just stuck out to me. A History of the Medicines We Take: From Ancient Times to Present Day by N. Anthony Armstrong My rating: 2 of 5 stars I have mixed feelings about this book. It contains a lot of interesting information, but it does so in a way that is difficult to absorb. It reminds me more of an academic textbook, than a book for general reading. I’m not sure I agree with the blurb that calls it “lively”. The first section works through history, from ancient times to present day, listing the medicines we have evidence for, and in some cases their uses. Unfortunately, it is written in such a way that (to me at least) it came across as simply a list of studies and discoveries that have shown that herbs have been used historically by early man etc, followed by a list of historical figures and the books they’ve written. A Cat Called Cupid by Tilly Tennant My rating: 3 of 5 stars I chose this book because I have enjoyed others by the author, but mostly because of the cat (obviously). The idea of a cat bringing two people together is an excellent one. The story is entertaining and enjoyable, though it contains a little more drama than I prefer. I was disappointed that Lara responded to Lucien’s trouble-making by jumping right back into the drama, after having avoided it for a year. However, it worked out well in the end, and is, I suspect, realistic to the way most of us would react! The last chapter should really be called an epilogue as it takes place a year after the previous chapter. I found the jump in time very confusing, as there was no indication that a whole year had passed for quite some time. A fun concept, amusingly carried out, just a little too much drama for my taste. Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter My rating: 4 of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book about how Nell finds her feet after her business and relationship fall apart. It covers about a year of her life, and it was great to see her personal growth over that time. Although there is romance in this story, it’s not really about that. I really liked the fact that falling in love didn’t magically fix everything for Nell, that it was more a gradual acceptance that life is complicated and confusing, and that’s ok. This was a relaxing and fulfilling read, and I’d recommend it to anyone getting a bit sick of reading about 20-somethings partying and falling in instalove (not that those books can’t be fun). Of Salt and Shore by Annet Schaap My rating: 3 of 5 stars This story is too dark for my taste (and definitely too dark for me when I was middle grade age!), though luckily it ends happily. I enjoyed some aspects of it. Lampie was a great character, and I liked the way that she drew out Fish, and eventually helped him to be himself. I liked that the story was about mermaids. Southern Ghost Hunter Series: 5th Anniversary Special Edition by Angie Fox My rating: 5 of 5 stars Having been a fan of Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter series for a while now, I was thrilled to receive an ARC of the 5th Anniversary Edition box set. This not only includes books 1, 1.5 and 2, but a host of special extras. Southern Spirits: This was a great start to the series, introducing us to the most important characters, and solving a fun mystery (or two, or more, depending how you count!). There’s also a hint of romance, a lovely pet skunk and a myriad of ghosts. What more could you possibly want? A Ghostly Gift: This is a fun novella - a small mystery for Verity to solve, with the help of Frankie and Melody. I really enjoyed it. The Power of Breathwork: Simple Practices to Promote Wellbeing by Jennifer Patterson My rating: 4 of 5 stars I have been practicing meditation/mindfulness for over 2 years now, so when I saw this book, I thought it would be interesting to explore a related area. Before I get onto reviewing the contents, let me just say what a beautiful little book this is! The cover is lovely (in fact it is the reason I was drawn in), and every single page has an attractive background and border.  I think this is a good introduction to the subject. It covers the basic concepts, what breathwork can be used for, and so on, in an informative way that is suitable for a complete beginner such as myself. I don’t feel that building an altar would be for me, and I was disappointed by the lack of science (or even brief references to where you could look it up), but otherwise a good overview. Family For Beginners by Sarah Morgan My rating: 5 of 5 stars I loved this book so much, it was beautiful. I don’t know what else to say! I loved the characters, and their development, the way they all slowly learned the true meaning of family, and acceptance. I loved the fact that they all fought for each other, and particularly that Flora didn’t just go storming off when she was upset. Sarah Morgan’s writing just seems to get better and better. Bewitching Season by Marissa Doyle My rating: 4 of 5 stars I enjoyed this book a lot. I love Regencies in general, and adding magic just makes it more fun. The character development for Persephone was realistic and great to see. I did find how long it took for them to take any action a little irritating, but otherwise, this is excellent, lighthearted fun. I think I shall seek out others in the series. View all my reviews
