Fur and Grrr

This is a book of funny anecdotes and jokes about dogs. Sadly, I only found a few of these funny. Perhaps if I had a dog, I’d find more of them amusing? It certainly contains many, and also states the sources they were obtained from, where possible. The illustrations that separate the sections are lovely, even on a black and white kindle. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Etiquette & Espionage, by Gail Carriger

Excellent fun, as always. One of my favourite books. I really enjoyed reading the book this time around. I absolutely adore the audiobook, but reading the words allows me to appreciate Gail’s use of language, which makes each sentence a gem in itself. The only other authors I can think of who do this are: P. G. Wodehouse, Jane Austen and to a lesser extent Terry Pratchett and Georgette Heyer.

Esme’s Wish

I really enjoyed Esme’s Wish, a MG/YA fantasy adventure where a young teen tries to solve the mystery of where her mother disappeared to many years ago. Her investigation leads her to another world. I absolutely loved this beautiful alternative world, with magic and dragons, among other things. The quality of the writing is excellent, I noticed no mistakes at all (a very rare thing indeed). The world-building is also excellent. I highly recommend it to adults, as well as the intended age group. I can’t wait to read the next one! I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Tales of a Nuisance Man

I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This collection of short stories, interspersed with interludes, is good fun. It is well written, and edited/proof read to a pretty good standard. There are still a few mistakes (use instead of us, for example) that pull you out of the story, but it is a very few. Set in a city populated with orcs, dwarves, humans and so on, it tells the stories of various incidents in the life of Duke Grandfather, a Nuisance Man. These men take on jobs posted on the nuisance board at the local watch house, eliminating non-humans who have become a nuisance. It is set at a time when humans (or at least some of them) are coming to realise that non-humans do good and bad things, just like humans, and consequently only deserve to be eliminated if they have actually committed a serious crime. Each story is different, some are funny, some are sad. One was a little too dark for my tastes. I enjoyed the overall f

Welcome

Hello, and welcome to my haven of tranquility - and book reviews! I mostly read romance and fantasy, but many other genres sneak their way in. My preference is for books that are light-hearted, humorous and entertaining. Some reviews will be for audiobooks, and this will be clearly marked in the review. I have an illness called M.E./C.F.S., so there will sometimes be gaps in posting. Happy reading!
